Your Turn: The Best and Worst Volleyballs
No one piece of equipment in volleyball has more of an impact on your game than the actual ball itself. Since volleyball is all about touch, a bad ball can make it tough to control.

And if it is made of that super-hard plastic-like "leather," just a few serve receptions can turn your forearms into mincemeat. But the good ones, oh, the good ones. They seem to pass themselves sometimes.

So here's your chance to weigh in on the best and worst volleyballs out there. Write a review of your favorite or least favorite ball. Big Weekend Ahead for Top NCAA Teams
After all the craziness of the last few weeks in beach volleyball, we can now officially turn our attention back to the indoor game.

The women's season is underway and the week 2 regular season rankings are out. Despite losing superstars Megan Hodge and Alisha Glass, Penn State is still atop the the Coaches Poll. They started the season with a 6-0 record, though they have not yet been tested. This weekend that will change as the Nittany Lions head to Florida for the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic along with No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Florida, and No. 5 Texas.

This tournament will be a great chance to get these teams off paper and see how they match up in the real world, albeit the early stages. Read more...
Big Weekend Ahead for Top NCAA Teams originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 18:02:07.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Last Event, First U.S. Loss for Todd and Phil
Organizers in Cincinnati put together what from all accounts was a great pro beach volleyball event without the help of the AVP this past weekend. Eight men's and eight women's pairs took to the court at Hahana Beach and played it out for a $10,000 first place prize.

For the first time all season long here in the States, Todd and Phil did not come out on top. They lost in two sets (21-15, 24-22) to Sean Rosenthal and John Hyden, who have tried unsuccessfully to unseat the reigning best team for months. Though they had good success against Todd and Phil last year, they were not able to best them until this week.

It has been a long, emotionally draining season for all the AVP players, but for Todd and Phil in particular. They've been traveling non-stop back and forth between AVP and FIVB events. They won every U.S. event minus a rained out final early on and took gold at nine FIVB events, making them the international and domestic champs. An uncharacteristic loss is a tough way to end a fantastic season for those two, but congrats to Sean and John for taking it to the top dogs.
Last Event, First U.S. Loss for Todd and Phil originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 17:29:44.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

USA Women Way Ahead of Schedule
Last week I mentioned how great the USA women's national team looks of late. I wrote about how they were strong and deep and maybe the best team we've ever put together. I predicted that they would do well in the Grand Prix final round, but would not get past Brazil due to their relative inexperience. Last Sunday, these women proved to be way ahead of schedule.

After a slow, Logan-less start in week one, Tom re-joined the squad and the U.S won 11 straight matches including a 5-0 run in the final round to win gold. They beat Poland and eight-time champs Brazil in close five set matches and took care of China, Japan and Italy in three sets apiece. They racked up the post-tourney awards too - middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo won the MVP and Best Blocker awards and Alisha Glass was named Best Setter of the tournament.

As strong as I could tell they were last week, I was not expecting them to win this tournament. Having recently formed this latest incarnation of the national team, I figured they'd use this tournament to gain experience and work on the team cohesion they'll need in the coming years. They did that and much more in the last four weeks, coming along much more quickly than anyone could have expected.
USA Women Way Ahead of Schedule originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 at 09:44:19.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

On Saturday 8/28, the winners of the Barefoot Wine AVPNext Championship Cup will take on the Olympians in Milwaukee. The men's winner will take on Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser while the winning women's team will play Kerri Walsh and Rachel Wacholder.

The AVP tournament that was planned for Cincinnati will go on, put together by locals there on Labor Day Weekend. The Pro Beach Volleyball Players Championship will be held on Sept. 2-5th at Hahana Beach.

The Problem with Nick
If you didn't hear the interview that Nick Lewin did on The Net Live this week, you have to take a listen. You won't believe it. The show is over two hours long, so I'll save you some time - jump to about 43 minutes into the show to hear Lewin's segment.

In the nearly 23-minute interview with Kevin Barnett and Chris McGee, Lewin of RJSM (the entity that owns the AVP property) managed to lose even more fans as he evaded questions, pleaded ignorance, blamed others and otherwise seemed completely disinterested in the fate of the AVP.

During the short interview, which is carried live over the web, Lewin showed unreal disrespect for his interviewers and the audience when he put them on hold not once, but twice. All Barnett could say was "Wow." That sentiment was shared by all who were listening in.
The Problem with Nick originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 21:02:39.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Here Comes Team USA
The USA women are starting to find their stride at the World Grand Prix. Since Logan Tom rejoined the squad last week, the team has won its last six matches and catapulted from fifth place to second in the standings behind Brazil.

With their 7-2 record, the USA women will be in the final round with Brazil, Poland, Japan, Italy and China. The matches have been airing on Universal Sports and if you haven't had a chance to check out this team, you should make some time.

In my opinion, this is the best all-around team the women have fielded in years. Maybe ever. They are strong at every position and they are deep. This Grand Prix team is young but they are overflowing with talent. In only a few weeks they have managed to turn into a much more cohesive unit than I was expecting at this point and it bodes well for the next two years.

Their youth means that they're widely inexperienced internationally and they have a ways to go before they're ready for London. They'll get a much-needed test in this final round. Beating Brazil would be quite a feat at this point but regardless of the outcome, the match experience they'll gain here will be pivotal.

It is early yet, but mark my words - this team has a legit shot at a gold medal in 2012.

Here Comes Team USA originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 12:56:39.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Of Asterisks and Immortality
One question that came up in the midst of all the talk of boycotts and conspiracy theories surrounding the Manhattan Beach tournament was whether or not it was fair for this year's winners to get their names on the pier.
After all, if the top players aren't there, is it really such a feat to win? Maybe there should be an asterisk by the name of this year's winner.

But after seeing the event this weekend, I don't think anyone can take the win away from Wachtfogel and Rosenthal. Both local boys, they grew up watching Manhattan and longing to one day get their names immortalized there.
Rosenthal's name was already there from a win with Jake Gibb in 2009. But it is doubtful a player like Wachtfogel would ever have graced the pier if guys like Phil and Todd and the rest of the AVP players had been there.

To me, that matters not at all. Some of the top teams were in Finland for an FIVB event, but the rest were absent by choice. I like that this tournament offered the chance for an unlikely duo to grace the pier.

Their names sit next to Hovland, Dodd, Kiraly, Smith, Steffes, O'Hara and Von Hagen. And there they deserve to stay.

Of Asterisks and Immortality originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 02:37:51.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Old School Rules Bring Manhattan Boycott
The Manhattan Beach tournament celebrated its 50th anniversary over the weekend despite the collapse of the AVP. The long-standing beach volleyball tradition was carried on. But the weekend was not without its drama.

After the AVP folded, the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA) put the event together in just a few days. A handful of sponsors were found and they managed to raise $15,000 in prize money.

Though that is chump change to current pro players, the tradition and prestige of the tournament along with the added bonus of getting your name permanently affixed to the city's pier for a win was enough to attract many of the newly unemployed former AVP players. Or at least it would have been if the CBVA hadn't decided to run the tournament with old school rules.

In the plus column, bringing back the old rules brought back some former stars including Brent Frohoff and Scott Ayakatubby who won several matches on Saturday. It also brought out an element of fun. Austin Rester, a 28-year old AVP player paid homage to the past by wearing yellow neon short shorts and a lime green neon hat circa 1987.

It may have been all fun and games, but some of the AVP players didn't find the decision so amusing. Kerri Walsh wrote a letter urging her fellow AVP players to boycott the tournament. In her opinion, playing by old school rules would take the sport backward.

A Shot at Grand Prix Final for USA Women
The USA women won all three matches in the second preliminary round of the Grand Prix. The wins put them in fifth place overall and if the tournament ended today they would make the final round.

The tournament does not end today though, it continues for one more week of preliminaries and the women will need to earn six points (or win two out of three matches in four sets or less) to secure a spot in the playoffs. The top five teams and the host country, China will make the final.

This is very achievable goal for this USA team which added Logan Tom to the roster just last week. They'll go up against 10th place Thailand, 8th place Germany and 4th place China this weekend.

A Shot at Grand Prix Final for USA Women originally appeared on About.com Volleyball on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at 10:56:59.

Permalink | Comment | Email this
