Women in Table Tennis

Where are the women?
Logo courtesy of Women in Table Tennis

Why are there so few female table tennis players? I'm not sure how things stand world wide, but I can certainly attest that over here in Australia, male ping-pong players heavily outnumber the females. Which is kind of strange really, since table tennis is an excellent example of a sport where technique and tactics can often overcome the difference in muscle power between men and women.
So I was intrigued to see the creation of a new table tennis website, called Women in Table Tennis. It's got an international focus, although there is a certain amount of Australian content since the creators appear to be Aussies. With a range of interviews, videos, news and results, they are really making an effort to showcase female table tennis players. There is even a section for grants available to female athletes, which is an excellent idea that should be adopted for both sexes by all ITTF members official table tennis websites.
With the very heavy bias towards male table tennis players on the Internet, it's actually kind of surprising that there aren't more websites out there promoting table tennis as a sport for women. Kudos to the creators for leading the way in getting some equality in the sport's Internet profile.

Women in Table Tennis originally appeared on About.com Table Tennis / Ping-Pong on Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 00:43:33.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

Test Your Table Tennis I.Q.

After all, you wouldn't expect to be allowed move your knight along the diagonals in chess, would you? Or use flippers in the 50m freestyle? It would be ridiculous.
But while these examples are a bit extreme, there are a number of situations in table tennis where it is obvious that players (and sometimes officials) haven't read the rules, or perhaps have failed to understand them. It can happen to us all - I know that just recently I discovered that you aren't allowed an injury break for cramp! These situations don't happen all that often, but when they do, they frequently leave everyone involved scratching their heads and saying "Hmmm. What's the rules on that?"
So I thought in the weeks to come I would highlight a few of these tricky occurrences, and ask your opinion on the correct answer before giving my reasoning a few days later, after we have time to get a few responses to see what most people think.
So let's start with a fairly common situation, that still causes plenty of friction between players.
The Scenario
Player A serves the ball to Player B. The umpire is not sure whether the ball toss reached the required 16cm in height. What must the umpire do?

Test Your Table Tennis I.Q. originally appeared on About.com Table Tennis / Ping-Pong on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 at 23:31:34.

Permalink | Comment | Email this

New USATT Website - Latest or Late News?

Cavanaugh (CEO) mentioned that USATT would soon be moving to a new website at http://tabletennis.teamusa.org/, becoming a part of the Olympic Team USA family. While the old website will still be maintained, the new website is intended to become the primary home page for USATT.
After having a browse around for a while, I must admit I quite like the layout of the new website. It's a welcome update to the look and feel, and the addition of videos and photo galleries are a nice touch too. So it looks like USATT will have a good Internet home for the foreseeable future.
One minor gripe is that the amount of news is a little sparse. This is not necessarily the fault of the website team, since they would probably just publish what they are sent from USATT and its members, but the the latest update appears to be a piece from July 27, almost three weeks ago. That said, the original USATT website was never exactly overflowing with the latest news either.
Interestingly enough, this appears to be a not unusual situation, where a lot of time and effort is put into developing a website for a table tennis association, and then everybody sits back and goes "Phew!", and forgets to put up new content on a regular basis. The Table Tennis Australia website was guilty of this in the past, but in recent months they have made a real effort to keep publishing a steady stream of new articles and latest news, making them worthy of a regular visit. Not to mention the newish ETTA website, which was redesigned a few months back and has been faithfully kept up to date since. Although some English players would point out that the ETTA had better do so, since they have apparently decided to cease publication of Table Tennis News, their print magazine (note that this is a link to a Word document).
Hopefully the USATT can do something similar and fill their attractive new website with a host of new content and the latest USA happenings.

New USATT Website - Latest or Late News? originally appeared on About.com Table Tennis / Ping-Pong on Thursday, August 19th, 2010 at 23:36:24.

Permalink | Comment | Email this
